Ricky Nelson Caused Me Many Trust Issues

Do you remember Ricky Nelson? For those of you who don't, he was a rock and roll star from the 1950's and 1960's. -

When I was about 7 or 8 (?) this is really a guess. I know it was before I was 10 because of where we lived.  Anyway, when I was a young girl, my Dad raised some pigs. Again, my memory is iffy on this point. I don't know if he actually raised pigS or if it was just one pig. I don't remember if it was pig or hog - but that doesn't really matter at this point.

(this is NOT a picture of my Dad's livestock.)

Now, I'm sure you're wondering what Ricky Nelson has to do with my dad's pig raising...

I named aforementioned pig, Ricky Nelson. I am 60 now and don't remember the reason for this - I'm sure I thought he was "cute" - Ricky and the pig...

Anyway, we rocked along for however long a farmer raises "meat" pigs... Ah, yes, now you understand where I'm going with this story...

One day, some people came out to the farm and helped my Dad butcher Ricky Nelson...  A dark day on the farm.

I don't remember crying about this. - I was a farm girl after all and animals were to eat. - for the most part. BUT... I did say I would NEVER eat that pork.

I do remember eating lots of "chicken" over the next year. My mom told me that every piece of pork I ate was chicken...

This is why I have trust issues to this day.

To heap more coals on my Mom's head - when they butchered my brother's meat rabbits she told me I was eating tuna salad...

My trust issues are valid. I'm sure you can see that.

  1. I understand completely. One of my dad's patients used to bring him 'mountain oysters' when he cut his calves. For years I thought we were eating pork tenderloin. *sigh* Lies and deception all around. I'm with you 100%.
