The Piano Player - Or NOT!!

There is an expectation in most churches. An unrealistic expectation more often than not. It's of that woman sitting in the pew Sunday after Sunday. The woman who is listening intently - or at least seems to be. Usually the loneliest woman in your church. Or maybe in your church she's the busiest. At any rate, most church attenders have an expectation of this woman. But to her confusion, not all expectations are the same. There are as many expectations of this woman as there are attendees in your church.

She's your pastor's wife.

Here's my piano story:
When I was a child I took piano lessons for several years. - For some reason 7 years sticks in my mind. Finally, Mrs. Johnson, the piano teacher told my mom that I was incapable of learning how to play the piano. I can play with my right hand - but can't look at the music and play with both left and right hands! (I have a hard time chewing gum and walking!)

So my life rocked along with no more piano. Then at age 26 I found myself living on a college campus with three children and a husband going into the ministry.

The Music Professor asked me if I could play the piano. So I told Mrs. Murray my tale of the piano. She said to me, "You should take piano from me for one semester. I can have you playing out of the hymnbook in that amount of time. EVERY preacher's wife should be able to play the piano." Okay. Sounded good to me. Maybe Mrs. Murray knew something Mrs. Johnson didn't.

After a long semester of practicing every day in the practice rooms and learning my final piece, Mrs. Murray said, "Honey, I think your childhood piano teacher was right!"

So that was the end of this preacher's wife playing the piano!

But, if I could tell you how many times I was asked if I played the piano, if I could sing, if I could do anything musical - you would be shocked.

Everyone expected something from me.

When asked what could I offer the church - my answer became, "I will be a Christian." When asked, before moving my family to work at the church in Kingston, Jamaica - "What will you be doing as a missionary?" My answer was "I will be a Christian."

That was an easy way to say, I will be doing whatever God calls me to do, whatever He guides me to. And you know what? Often that was encouraging, standing beside and supporting the pastor. Sometimes God calls us to do the background work - not the stage work. As a church we should be asking God to give our pastor's wife the strength and courage just to do what HE wants her to do. To be who HE wants her to be. Not who we want her to be.

One of my pet peeves is to hear of a church board hiring  a new minister with a talented wife and saying "We are getting two for the price of one."  SHAME on YOU....

Our responsibility to our pastor's wife?

 Love her.

Support her.

Don't judge her.

Don't gossip about her or her children.

But the most important action we can do for our pastor's wife -

Pray for her.

Plinky Blog Prompts

I am trying to discipline myself to blog more. I have found a couple of web sites that give "blog prompts." These hopefully will become a reminder for me to blog more regularly.

While I don't plan on using a "blog prompt" everyday, it will come in handy to make my blog blocks go away(!) - I hope!

One of them is Plinky Prompts  another is Bloggy Moms.  I'm sure if I do some more research I will come up with more.

Today's Plinky Prompt is:
What do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing? How do you choose what to display? What mood are you trying to create?

This prompt immediately caught my attention because I only moved here two years ago. When I married The Husband we I moved into his "well established" house.

So I've been - and still am trying to blend our two "styles" into a home we are both comfortable in.

My goal in my Oklahoma home was to offer "peace", comfort, an "at home" feeling to those who visited. My home was older so I leaned to the shabby chic decor. - Mostly because my "stuff" was "shabby!!" : )

When I moved here, one of The Husband's first comments was "You're gonna fill our house with a bunch of "old crap" aren't you?"  - trust me, he said this in the kindest way possible! He really doesn't mind what I do!

But I have kept that comment in mind and tried to be respectful of his style - as well as my own. Some things I've left "as is" - others I've changed slowly. So, in a way we have a mix of several styles. My ultimate goal is still for people to feel at home here. Relaxed, peaceful and to find comfort.

Prayer in Schools

I'm not writing this to change anyone's mind. I'm just publicly stating my opinion - for the first time. I've said this before privately to people - friends, family but never publicly. I'm bringing this up because I often see posts on facebook and twitter about legalizing prayer in schools.

If we were to go to the polls today to vote on allowing public prayer legally back into the schools - I would vote no.

I know things would be different if prayer and mandatory Bible reading had not been removed - but they were and our country has continued on a fast decline.

This becomes one of the

"Would-a, Could-a, Should-a's"

of our country."

To view graphs of how quickly things have declined since the removal of both, go to this website: Removal of Prayer and Bible Study Graphs

Anyway, back to the reasoning behind my statement "I would vote no."

With Oprah and others spreading a religious philosophy that seems to have become the norm we are living in times when Christianity has become just a word to many. Oprah touts on national television, in books, magazines and to anyone who will listen that "there are many ways to God." Jesus isn't the only way according to Oprah - but my Bible says it is. The population is buying into this. They are using Christian words with non-Christian philosophies.

So, if prayer and Bible reading were returned to the public school system, the teacher or leader could pray to anyone, could teach my child to pray to anyone. I personally don't want my child or grandchild exposed to an adult praying to Buddha, to Satan or to any other prophet, saint,  or mythical being. I want my children praying to the one true God with their mediator being Jesus Christ. - And besides, there will always be prayer in school - not school led but the prayers that come from within each Christ follower.

"Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me."
